Tuchel: This is What We Lacked, and the Loss is Painful
England's national team coach, Thomas Tuchel, spoke in a press conference following the 1-0 loss to Japan in the international friendly match held at Wembley Stadium.
The coach said in his talk: "Today, we played the first half with a very tight style, which we didn't intend to do, but we restricted the field for ourselves. In the second half, we were more dynamic and used the spaces more with our wingers and full-backs, which is what we had planned all along. We took more risks and had opportunities, but we didn't capitalize on them."
He added: "The loss is painful. It's always painful to lose, and losing on our home ground is extremely painful. We were punished for something simple, a single counterattack in the first half. We need these matches, and we know it's a strong opponent, and many of our players were unavailable." Another new lineup, we tried many things, and we have to learn."
Regarding the false nine experience: "He was a false nine on one side only, and a regular striker on the other. We have to look at it realistically; it's not the end of the world. It's never ideal and we don't like it, but it's not a matter of being a false or regular striker, it's about performance, proving oneself, winning individual battles, and having courage. We can perform better, but we're facing an experienced team with a new lineup and new players."
He concluded regarding the over-reliance on Harry Kane: "Well, why wouldn't Argentina rely on Messi or Portugal on Cristiano Ronaldo? This is completely normal. Key players have left our camp, and we noticed that. We lacked offensive effectiveness."
