Idrissa Gueye: Ready to Return African Nations Medals to Morocco
Sunday 22-03-2026
Senegal national team midfielder, Idrissa Gueye, expressed his readiness to return the medals he won with his national team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to Morocco, in a move aimed at easing tensions between the two sides following the recent decision by the Confederation of African Football.

In media statements, Guy explained that he might personally seek to collect and return the medals if it would help ease tensions, while also emphasizing that the title was decided on the field.

The player affirmed that his national team did enough to secure victory in the final match, considering that titles are decided on the field and not off it. This was in reference to the controversy following the CAF's decision to consider Senegal withdrawn and award the title to Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced, weeks after the final, the official recognition of Morocco's 3-0 victory based on the competition's regulations, following the events that occurred during the match. This prompted the Senegalese federation to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

It is noted that the final match ended with Senegal winning 1-0 after extra time, before the case was taken back to the legal track, which continues to stir widespread controversy in African football circles.
