The Asian Football Confederation confirmed that the Iranian national team is still on track to participate in the 2026 World Cup, despite recent speculations about a possible withdrawal due to political tensions and the ongoing war in the Middle East.

This clarification came from the Secretary-General of the Asian Football Confederation, Windsor John, who confirmed that the Confederation has not received any official confirmation regarding the withdrawal of the Iranian team from the tournament.

He said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur: "Iran is a member of the federation, and we want its participation. So far, as far as we know, it will play in the World Cup."

The Asian official added that the current discussions reflect a state of tension and emotion due to the political situation, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the Iranian Football Federation, not any other entity.

John concluded his statements by noting that the Iranian federation has informed them of its intention to participate in the tournament, which means that the Iranian team will remain among the candidates to appear in the 2026 World Cup unless any official changes occur later.
