Will the Iraqi Stars League Be Postponed?.. Learn the Details
The discussion has resumed about the future of the Iraqi Stars League 2025–2026 season, amid the current regional conditions, with increasing speculations about the possibility of postponing or canceling the competitions. This has prompted Iraqi clubs to hold urgent meetings to discuss the future of the championship in the upcoming phase.
In this context, the Baghdad Clubs Gathering held a meeting last evening, attended by gathering members, as well as representatives from Najaf, Naft Maysan, and Al-Qasim clubs as guests of honor. The attendees discussed circulating statements about the league's postponement and reviewed the options and mechanisms proposed to deal with the current situation.
During the meeting, several issues related to the sports reality in Iraq were discussed, especially concerning proposals addressing the cancellation or postponement of league competitions, given the potential impacts of regional circumstances on sports activities.
The Baghdad Clubs Gathering confirmed in an official statement that "the decision to cancel or postpone the league is not within the clubs' authority but is the responsibility of the executive office of the Iraqi Football Association, as it is the official body responsible for organizing football competitions in the country." The statement added that "the Iraqi Football Association is the entity authorized to assess the current conditions and make the most suitable decision that serves the general interest of Iraqi football, whether by continuing the competitions or taking any measures deemed necessary by the competent authorities."
The statement pointed out that the clubs' gathering trusts the Iraqi Association and its executive office in making appropriate decisions that balance the continuation of football activities and ensure the safety of clubs, players, and fans amid regional changes.
For his part, the Secretary of Naft Maysan Club, Mushtaq Kazem, confirmed that "continuing the league carries positive messages reflecting the country's ability to continue its daily life despite challenges. Football represents an important outlet for millions of Iraqi fans, and it is unfair to burden players, fans, or coaches with the consequences of decisions beyond their authority." He added, "Many club presidents are leadership figures who understand the impact of sports on society, and continuing football activities reflects Iraq's will for life, work, and development."
In the same vein, the President of Al-Zawraa Club, Haider Shanshul, emphasized the club's administration's full support for the continuation of the league competitions, denying rumors about Al-Zawraa's desire to stop the championship. He said, "The club's position is clear in supporting the continuation of the league, and what is being circulated about the cancellation of the competition is baseless, and there are those who try to exploit the situation to stir confusion."
