Gasperini: Our Season is Full of Collapses, We Should Have Been More Fierce
Gian Piero Gasperini, the head coach of AS Roma, expressed his deep regret after his team drew 3-3 against Juventus in the Italian league, emphasizing that his team is struggling with repeatedly losing points in the final minutes.
Roma was leading 3-1 before conceding two goals in the last 12 minutes plus injury time, settling for just one point after being close to securing an important victory.
Gasperini said, "The goal also came from a free kick, and we were very passive once again."
He continued: "We were in the right positions, but our season is full of such situations in the final minutes, where teams like Juventus, Milan, Inter, and Napoli manage to turn matches around in crucial moments or even during injury time."
He added, "They rely on players who excel in aerial games and set pieces, and they have earned many points this way. They deserve congratulations for that, but we could have performed better because our defense was too static, whereas we should have been more aggressive."
The Roma coach pointed out that his team performed well against one of the major teams, but they did not succeed in securing the result despite scoring three goals.
He said, "Stepping back a little isn't a bad thing when you have a player like Malen; that's how the third goal was scored."
He continued: "We should have been physically stronger, as taking Cristante out deprived us of our best player in aerial duels."
He explained: "The two goals were very similar, long balls were sent into the penalty area and were redirected to the far post, where we were very passive. This is what we should blame ourselves for, not anything else."
He also pointed out that the free kick caused by Neal Al Ainawi against Pierre Kalulu in the equalizing goal was avoidable, noting that his team has conceded nine out of 19 goals this season from set pieces.
He said: "That's true, but don't forget that we also scored from a corner kick. The problem is that set pieces were the only way Juventus could pose a threat. Even when we defended a bit deeper, they rarely created chances."
Gasperini concluded his statements by saying: "Clearly, winning here would have put us seven points ahead of Juventus and represented a big step forward, but we are still in the competition, we are in the race, we delivered an exceptional performance, and this result should not discourage us."
