Mexico is facing a new security challenge less than four months before the start of the 2026 World Cup finals, following a wave of violence in several states after the announcement of the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during a military operation carried out by the army in the state of Jalisco.

The operation was followed by disturbances in several cities, including Guadalajara and other areas in the west of the country, where vehicles were set on fire and some roads were closed amid a heavy security presence. Additionally, transportation services were suspended in some areas as a precautionary measure in anticipation of any escalation.

In the same context, foreign entities have issued warnings to their nationals, urging them to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the current period.

These developments are particularly significant as Mexico prepares to host part of the 2026 World Cup matches, alongside the United States and Canada.

Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara were chosen among the host cities, placing the authorities with the doubled responsibility of ensuring security and stability during the anticipated event.

So far, there has been no official comment from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) regarding the impact of these events on the preparations, while the Mexican government affirms the continuation of organizational and security arrangements in preparation for hosting the tournament.
