Omdurman Derby in Kigali Ignites the Rivalry Between Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh in the Rwandan League
Monday 16-02-2026
The Amahoro National Stadium in the Rwandan capital Kigali will witness tomorrow, Tuesday, a highly anticipated clash between Sudanese giants, league leaders Al-Hilal and their traditional rival Al-Merrikh, in a postponed match from the 17th round of the Rwandan league, which they are participating in due to the country's circumstances.

Al-Hilal seeks to continue its historic winning streak, while Al-Merrikh enters the match with the ambition of breaking its recent series of draws and regaining the winning rhythm in one of the season's most prominent derbies.

Al-Hilal enters the match in its best technical and moral condition after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the African Champions League and leading the Rwandan league table with 38 points from 16 matches, achieving 12 wins, two draws, and two losses.

The team boasts the strongest attack line, scoring 41 goals, alongside the second-best defense line, conceding 10 goals, while their young Liberian striker Emmanuel Flomo tops the scorers' list with 11 goals.

Al-Hilal hopes to achieve its tenth consecutive victory to break the record for the longest winning streak in the history of the Rwandan league, with the potential absence of foreign duo Stephen Eboela and Flomo due to minor injuries.

On the other hand, Al-Merrikh is experiencing a mixed period despite occupying fourth place with 34 points from 18 matches, as it failed to secure a win in the last seven league games, yet holds a record streak of 15 matches without a defeat.

The club suffers from complex administrative conditions, yet it has secured qualification to the elite league and relies on the return of several key players to strengthen its ranks, despite the absence of Mohamed Al-Rasheed due to injury and Mujtaba Faisal due to suspension, with doubts about the readiness of Ivorian striker Mohamed Gabani.

The derby marks the first appearance for the new technical teams of both sides, with Romanian Laurentiu Reghecampf leading Al-Hilal, while Serbian Darko Novic leads Al-Merrikh, alongside a large lineup of new players experiencing their first Omdurman derby.
