Arbeloa: Counterattacks Will Be One of Our Weapons, and We Knew This
Sunday 25-01-2026
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared at a press conference following the 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the 21st round of the Spanish League "La Liga," at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The coach said: "It's been a long time since we've seen such a complete version of the team... What do you think? We saw this version last Wednesday, it hasn't been long! (smiles) The players' commitment is undeniable, the effort they put in on a field like this, against such a great opponent and a very great coach."

He added: "We knew it was one of the toughest matches in La Liga because we played at the stadium of the team in third place. Therefore, the players deserve all the credit for their effort and collective commitment. Without a doubt, this is a team victory, a victory for the team. We are very happy to get the three points."

Regarding Vinicius's brilliance: "As happened last Wednesday, Vinicius is a great player, one we must make the most of. We should always look for him and create situations that give him the freedom to face one-on-one challenges and deliver the kind of outstanding performances he showed throughout the match. As I always say: having Vinicius is a great blessing for the work he does for the team."

He continued: "What needs to be done to continue in this manner? We must keep working. We delivered a serious and strong match, but we still have a significant margin for improvement. We trained together for a very short time, and we didn't have enough time for real work. Most of the training sessions were for recovery. Therefore, we still have a lot to improve on, in all aspects. This team will develop further, and I don't think at all that this is its ceiling."

Regarding relying on counterattacks: "Certainly, I cannot oppose the nature of the players; on the contrary, I must take advantage of it. We have many outstanding players who excel in exploiting spaces, players who are fast and good at finishing. We need to capitalize on that. When we have the opportunity to run, we will, because this is their nature, and this is where they make a difference. It will be one of our weapons throughout the season."

He emphasized: "The first rule in any team is to be together. We will go through very difficult moments, and goals can only be achieved through unity. This is what I have tried to instill since day one. We saw that on Wednesday with Vinny's goal celebration, and we saw it today with Brahim Diaz. I have found a great group, players with a healthy spirit, who love each other, work together, and support each other. There are players who haven't participated but are training well and waiting for their chance. Victories are not achieved only by the players who play, but by everyone. The credit goes to all the players."

He concluded: "I said after the Albacete match that the physical aspect needs work... How do you see the situation now? No... I understand your question, but I'm only talking about the ten days I spent with them. They are working excellently day by day. It's true that we played many matches and most of the training was for recovery, but despite the lack of time to train, we find players who want to continue working and training. I am very happy with this desire to improve. This is the only way, even if it doesn't guarantee success. I am very happy with the players' commitment and behavior."
