Conte: The Draw Against Copenhagen is Painful, and We Must Do Better in Upcoming Matches
Antonio Conte, Napoli's coach, expressed his strong anger towards his team players after the costly draw against Copenhagen with ten men in the UEFA Champions League, saying: "This hurts me, and it should hurt all the players as well, we must be angry with ourselves."
Conte continued: "For the fourth consecutive time, we have shown that we are struggling. We were in full control, with 11 players against 10, so even if you are short and feel exhausted, you have to win these matches, simply you have to win."
He added: "There is disappointment because we couldn't do it, and thus it is clear that our current level does not suit this competition. We only have eight points in the Champions League, and we must all accept blame. We should have taken the result under such circumstances. There isn’t much more to say, we just have to be angry with ourselves because it was a golden opportunity, and maybe we did not realize what was at stake."
He further explained: "It was as if we were riding a bike downhill, and we made it go uphill by ourselves."
He clarified: "Starting tomorrow, we will begin preparing for the Juventus match, and we will see if we have 11 or 12 players available. What must be said tonight is that we should have won the match, and that’s the end of the story."
Regarding the injury crisis in the team, he added: "We know we are missing many important players, but that does not justify the performance. We must be ready from start to finish."
Conte concluded his statements: "This draw must bother us, because if it doesn’t, it means we don’t want to grow and improve. Copenhagen should not have been allowed to come back into the match with ten players, especially understanding the importance of this game. It is a draw that hurts me."
