Tebas: The Saudi League is Approaching Global Status
Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish League Association "La Liga," revealed that there is a real opportunity to hold a Spanish League match on Saudi soil in the near future.
Tebas explained, during his interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on the sidelines of his attendance at the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah, that the Saudi league is progressing steadily towards development, but it still needs some improvements to reach a global level.
He added that building a strong league cannot be achieved in just a few years and does not rely solely on attracting star players. He emphasized the importance of increasing fan attendance at all Saudi league matches, not just the major ones.
The president of La Liga pointed out that digital growth through social media platforms is a key factor in the global spread of the league. The greater the digital engagement, the higher the popularity and international presence of the tournament.
Tebas spoke about the ongoing cooperation between the Spanish and Saudi leagues, explaining that the partnership includes developing television broadcasting, combating piracy, and exchanging expertise in financial fair play regulations.
He also revealed that work is underway on a support project similar to the Spanish experience, aimed at assisting medium and small clubs through specialized consultations that help them develop and achieve sustainability.
Regarding the idea of holding La Liga matches in Saudi Arabia, Tebas confirmed that it is very likely to happen in Jeddah or Riyadh, but he ruled out moving the El Clásico match outside of Spain due to its huge local fanbase.
Tebas praised the remarkable attendance at the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah, describing the experience as exceptional and reflecting the strong connection between Saudi and Spanish fans. He also affirmed that the Saudi league is now just steps away from achieving global recognition.
