Barcelona Plans to Return to the 1-1 Rule Before Summer
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" reported that Barcelona is seeking to return to the 1-1 financial fair play rule before summer, which is a fundamental condition allowing the club to sign a major striker during the upcoming transfer window.
The newspaper explained that the Catalan club will include João Cancelo on loan in the current winter transfer market to compensate for Andreas Christensen's long absence, benefiting from part of the latter's salary to officially register the Portuguese player's contract.
The newspaper pointed out that the club had previously reached the 1-1 rule briefly in January 2025, which then allowed the renewal of important players' contracts such as Gavi, Pedri, Koubarsi, Araujo, and Gerard Martin, after selling the exploitation rights of 475 VIP seats at Spotify Camp Nou for 30 years in exchange for 100 million euros. Thanks to this operation, Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor were registered within the team.
The report added that the failure to receive the full amount prevented the operation from being approved by the financial auditor, which led to the club falling out of the 1-1 rule. However, the club has so far received 12 million out of the remaining 42 million, and the remaining amount is expected to arrive by June, enabling the VIP seats operation to return to the official accounts.
The newspaper confirmed that returning to the 1-1 rule will also be conditional on adhering to the current season's budget, which was approved by the shareholders' assembly with revenues of 1.075 billion euros and profits of 5 million euros, a target expected to be achieved with the help of Spotify Camp Nou revenues.
