Flick: Yamal Did Not Start Because of This Reason, and Our Defense Was Outstanding
Thursday 08-01-2026
Hans Flick, the coach of Barcelona, praised his team's excellent performance after the overwhelming 5-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, emphasizing his full satisfaction with what the players delivered on the pitch.

Flick said: "For me, once the match ends, I start thinking about the next game, but I really appreciate what I saw today. We kept a clean sheet again, which is very important because it gives us defensive confidence. Today we saw a different mentality and spirit, and I really liked how we played as a complete team, both offensively and defensively."

He continued: "I really love that we play as one team, united and for each other. Our defensive approach was excellent and was the key to the win. We were in the right positions and created many chances, and that’s what I like to see. The goals were wonderful, but in the end, it’s just one match."

Flick added about Lamine Yamal sitting on the bench: "He wasn’t feeling his best over the past two days. Yesterday he underwent some treatment and felt better, but he couldn’t train in the last two sessions, so he didn’t start. It’s not due to an injury, but a stomach issue; he wasn’t feeling well."

Flick continued speaking about Raphinha, saying: "I am very happy for him. He always shows 100% mentality on the pitch, and I am extremely pleased with his return at this level."

Regarding the match, he added: "We needed a few minutes to get into the rhythm of the game. We wanted to play this way, and that was our plan. After scoring two or three goals, we knew how to keep possession and stayed fully focused throughout the ninety minutes with solid defense."

The German coach concluded his talk by discussing the final, saying: "The nice thing about reaching the final is that you can watch the match calmly and see what will happen. As for Lewandowski, I am very honest with him. I am extremely happy with his level; he trains well and scores goals. We have two players capable of playing in this position, and we will decide the future at the end of the season."
