Courtois: This is How We Can Reverse the Current Situation, and We Showed Our Support for the Coach
Thursday 11-12-2025
Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid's goalkeeper, spoke to the media to discuss the 2-1 loss against Manchester City in the sixth round of the Champions League group stage at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Courtois said in his statement: "We played a good match. We scored the first goal 1-0, then the equalizer 1-1 came due to a mistake from me. The ball was coming at me quickly and I didn't know how to clear it better. When things go wrong, instead of the ball going to a teammate, it reaches the opponent and they score the equalizer. That gives them confidence. After that, there was a penalty that I need to review again, but I think it was a penalty. However, there was also a push on Rüdiger in the first goal. In the end, this is part of the situation we are living through."

He added: "In the second half, they started better, but from the 60th or 65th minute we regained control of the match, and we had chances to equalize but they didn't go in, and with that you lose a match that you were supposed to win."

He continued: "Did you lose confidence after City's first goal? I don't think we lost confidence, but the goal came from a trivial set-piece, and the other came quickly after. At halftime, we said the same thing. They started better, but after that we had chances to equalize."

Regarding the team's current situation, he said: "We don't see it negatively. We want to win our matches because we realize our position; in the league we have lost many points, and in the Champions League things are good, but we cannot afford to lose points if we want to remain among the top 8 teams. We showed our support for the coach, we played well, and gave everything we had, and that showed on the pitch."

He concluded: "How can the current situation be reversed? Only by winning. The solution is to win and continue with the same intensity of performance that we showed today. That is the key, just like we won in Bilbao after a complete match. If we play like today and like against Bilbao, we will achieve victories in difficult stadiums like Alavés. We must win, then come the King’s Cup matches, then against Sevilla at Bernabéu to finish the year well."
