Van Dijk: There Are Matters Happening Between Salah and the Club, and We Knew the Match Would Be Difficult
Tuesday 09-12-2025
Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk appeared in a press statement after the 1-0 victory over Inter in the sixth round of the Champions League group stage.

The defender said in his speech: "It's a good feeling to win, especially during the period we're going through. We're trying to find consistency and build something for the future. I hope today's match was one of those performances. We knew it would be a tough game. We handled it well. It could have ended 0-0, but in the end, it finished positively for us."

He added: "This doesn't change anything. There is a lot of noise from the outside world, and that's normal when the performance isn't up to par. It's also deserved. We want to improve, we want to be more consistent and win matches. We're not doing that as we want. We must stay together as one unit, as we always have. That's what Liverpool represents."

Regarding Mohamed Salah's situation: "The situation is difficult, but it is a collective difficulty that we are all going through. There are matters happening between Mohamed and the club, and he is not here today, that is the truth. I don't believe that anything has changed in terms of our focus and determination."

He continued: "Should Salah apologize? I am not the one to decide if someone should apologize. He has been expressing his feelings over the past few days. This is something the club needs to handle, and of course, I as well. But our focus has remained, nothing has changed. He has also trained."

He added: "Mohamed Salah will soon go to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. I have known him for a long time; we are good friends and have experienced ups and downs together. We always talk, and these matters stay within the club as they should. We have to protect ourselves from external noise."

He emphasized: "The most important thing is that we talk to each other. We need to recover and start preparing now for the Brighton match. You have to celebrate and enjoy the good moments; otherwise, what’s the point of winning? We’ll stay here tonight, we must sleep well and eat well."

Regarding defensive solidity: "Against Leeds, we played well for 60 minutes as well, but when you don’t win and concede easy goals like what happened, it’s tough. We’re trying to find consistency, but we know they (the opponents) play the ball very comfortably. Everyone put in a great effort and ran hard. It could have ended 0-0, but we take the three points and move forward."

He concluded about the cancellation of Konaté's goal due to a handball against him: "It happens very quickly, so I have no idea if the ball actually touched his arm. When the referee makes a decision like this, it should be clear and obvious, but they look for something that might be there. I don't think this is good for the game."
