Slot: We will face a winning machine, and I have to prove myself to myself
Liverpool coach Arne Slot appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Eindhoven in the fifth round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot was asked whether Kirkiz's previous experience playing with Alkmaar would affect his selection tomorrow. He said, "No, it doesn't make a difference. I just asked him if he had ever beaten them before, and he said he did once away. It doesn't matter if he has played against Eindhoven before or in the Dutch league. I have five defenders, and he is the player currently available to fill the left-back position."
He added about PSV Eindhoven's level: "I can't say they are a suitable opponent for us at the moment. They went through a tough period last season and the beginning of this season, but in the last two or three months, they have been a winning machine, doing great work and have moved up six points in the league, which shows the level of their performance. The match schedule is the match schedule."
He continued about the loss to Nottingham: "On Sunday, I watched some Eindhoven matches and some other games, because that's what I love to do. That doesn't change."
And Soboslai's participation at right-back: "It is also clear that he is good in other areas of the field. We will wait to see where he will play tomorrow."
Regarding the team's recent performance: "We don't defend for 90 minutes, only for a few minutes. I have rarely coached a team that dominates possession like this, then defends just once and concedes a goal. Perhaps the solution is to have less possession. We did that against Real Madrid and Aston Villa and won. At times, we need to defend better. Against City, we lacked some aggression in the challenges."
He continued: "Do you have to prove yourself to the Liverpool fans? This has nothing to do with the current situation. At this level, you have to prove yourself every day. You can't say you've won a title before. You have to win the next match, for me and for the players. This is the environment I like to work in. I don't know if I need to prove myself to the fans, but I have to prove myself to myself."
Regarding the team's level: "It's ridiculous... unbelievable. I previously said you won't find enough excuses to justify what we're doing. This is unexpected for the club, for me, and for everyone, but perhaps Liverpool is the best club to face such periods... the harder it gets, the more united we become."
He added: "Last season, we didn't concede any goals from set pieces up to this point. This season, we've conceded 9 goals. There are many details involved, but the main problem is the number of goals we are conceding. From open play, we are still creating enough chances to score."
About Joe Gomez: "He is one of our five defenders. I usually don't go into details, but he received an injection in his knee last week. Usually, you don't feel anything afterward. He will be with the team tomorrow as he was on Saturday, but he wasn't fully ready. He trains every day, but he wasn't at full fitness."
Regarding the team's reception of the goals: "The first time Nottingham reached our penalty area from a set piece, they scored a goal. It took some time for us to regain our balance. I saw a team that tried hard. I showed them how many times we reached the opponent's area, which was six or seven times more than they did. They defended better in their area than we did in ours. We need to do that better as a team. Then it will become clear that we don't change much in our style of play. The number of goals we concede is the big difference between this season and the last."
He concluded about the refereeing: "We had an explanation for every decision against us this season, as I haven't found time to train the team. I didn't watch the Arsenal match, so I can't comment on it. Sometimes these things happen. Everyone has their opinions, and I have mine. I might see things objectively, but maybe I'm biased as Liverpool's coach. I don't have a big issue with Nottingham's first goal, but there was a goal two weeks ago that shouldn't have been allowed."
