Monday 17-11-2025
The clashes between the Saudi and Algerian national teams have regained their intensity after a seven-year hiatus, as the two sides meet again on Tuesday evening at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah, preparing for the Arab Cup tournament to be held in Doha next month.

This match is part of the Green team's training camp in Jeddah, where French coach Hervé Renard aims to assess the players' readiness before entering the final phase of preparations ahead of the opening match in the Arab Championship.

The history of matches between the two national teams includes only five encounters, according to the Saudi national team's website. In these, the Green Falcons have won twice, drawn twice, and Algeria has secured a single victory, reflecting closely matched levels and intense competition.

The Saudi national team scored eight goals compared to six for Algeria in these matches, which took place in various stadiums including Riyadh, Al Khobar, and Cádiz in Spain, under the leadership of several prominent coaches such as Khalil Al-Zayani, Zagallo, Puskás, and Petzi.

The first encounter between the two teams took place in the Friendship Cup in 1976 in the capital, Riyadh, and ended in favor of Algeria with a 3-1 victory. Meanwhile, one of Saudi Arabia's most notable wins came in the 1984 match, which ended with a 4-0 victory for the Green Team, led by Majed Abdullah.

The remaining matches were split between two draws in 1986 in Al Khobar, in addition to their last encounter in 2018 in Cádiz, which was decided by the Green Falcons with a double from Salman Al-Faraj and Yahya Al-Shehri under the leadership of Spanish coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.

Saleh Al-Naima tops the list of players with the most appearances against Algeria, having played in 3 matches. Meanwhile, 57 players have participated in various previous encounters, a number likely to increase in Tuesday's match due to changes in the current generation.

Majed Abdullah leads the top scorers in the matches between the two national teams with two goals, while Salman Al-Faraj, Jamal Mohammed, Saleh Khalifa, Shayea Al-Nafisa, the "Rocket" Mohammed Al-Mughnam, and Yahya Al-Shehri have each scored one goal.

Tuesday's match gains additional importance given the progress of the Algerian national team, which is ranked 35th in the world according to FIFA's October rankings, as well as Renard's desire to enhance the team's technical readiness ahead of the upcoming World Cup draw.

Al-Akhdar opened their Jeddah camp with a friendly win against Ivory Coast, thanks to a goal by Abu Al-Shamat. Although the team did not reach an ideal level of performance, the victory gave the players a morale boost ahead of the highly anticipated Arab summit.

The current Al-Akhdar camp includes 27 players from various positions, among them Nawaf Al-Aqidi, Abdullah Al-Khaibari, Salem Al-Dawsari, Saleh Al-Shehri, and Firas Al-Buraikan, in a squad that combines experience with young talents.

The Saudi national team is participating in Group B of the 2025 Arab Cup in Qatar, alongside the national teams of Morocco, the winner between Oman and Somalia, and the victor between Comoros and Yemen. The competition is expected to be intense and rich with diverse football styles.

The Arab Championship is considered one of the most important milestones that Renard relies on to shape a new identity for the Green Team before the start of the World Cup qualifiers, benefiting from strong competition between the North African teams and the other Gulf countries.
