Slot: We Did Not Perform Well, Lacked the Basics
Sunday 26-10-2025
Liverpool coach Arne Slot appeared in a press statement after the 3-2 loss to Brentford in the ninth round of the Premier League.

The coach said in his remarks: "The performance was not good. Perhaps with the exception of a period between 20 to 25 minutes in the first half. We were already trailing 1-0 at that time, but during those minutes, I felt that the result was possible. As for the rest of the match, looking at the way we played and the way Brentford played, I don’t think we were close at any moment to achieving a positive result."

On the fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League: "You cannot compare all matches, but the really concerning thing is that you are losing four times in a row. After that, you can evaluate the performance, and in my opinion today was the worst of the four. Once again, we conceded a goal from a set piece and did not score from one, which makes winning a football match difficult."

He emphasized: "We did not do the basics correctly in the first half and parts of the second. They won most of the individual duels and won the second balls more than us. When you come here knowing that you might concede goals, it is likely that one of them will be from a set piece, and also counter-attacks are one of their strengths, which is what happened in the two goals we conceded. I’m not sure if the referee would give them a penalty, but it turned out later that it was inside the area. After the score became 3-1, we tried to change things and made some substitutions, but to be completely honest, at that moment, it was more likely that they would score the fourth goal than for us to come back and make it 3-2."

About Mohamed Salah returning to scoring: "If Mo Salah starts a scoring streak, it will be extremely important for the team. Football is about scoring goals, but it is also about not conceding them. In many recent matches, we scored one or two or three goals, often in the first five minutes, it would be good for the team for the players to continue scoring, but that will only be beneficial if we as a team can keep a clean sheet, and this is not just about the last line of defense, but about what we as a team need to do better."

He concluded about injuries: "Naturally, you prefer to have all your players available, that is clear and simple. But if that is not possible, then the available players need to deliver results. This is something that can happen during the season, and that is what we are going through now. Of course, I don’t like it, but it is something you have to accept."
