Van Dijk: I Feel Disappointed, and We Will Overcome This Ordeal
Sunday 26-10-2025
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk appeared in press statements after the loss to Brentford 3-2 in the ninth round of the Premier League.

The Dutch defender said: "I feel disappointed about our loss here. We know their strengths and what they were trying to do. We needed to be responsible with the quality they had."

He added: "It was a disappointing night overall for us. It's hard to accept, but it’s the truth, and we have to move on."

Regarding the penalty against him: "I don't know. The referee said the ball was on the goal line, then marked it two meters outside the penalty area. I really didn't know what was happening. In the end, he awarded it, and that’s obviously not good."

He continued: "The truth is we lost today. We have the next match on Wednesday against an opponent [Crystal Palace] who has made things difficult for us this season."

He added: "We need to change our mentality quickly to be ready for that. They will come to Anfield to inflict more harm on us, but that is something hard for us to accept. We cannot deny that. It’s not an easy moment. We were trying to build on that performance against Frankfurt, and this was not an enjoyable evening.

Regarding not keeping a clean sheet, he concluded: "It's hard to say. The fact that we haven't kept a clean sheet in nine matches! It's easy to blame a specific person, or the defense, or set pieces. But in the end, it’s a collective issue. Everyone needs to review themselves, including me. I’m sure we will overcome this ordeal, but we won’t achieve that just by talking about it. We will try to improve. We need each other, we needed support. We need those who celebrated with us last year to be with us now more than ever. We will overcome this ordeal because we have quality offensively and defensively."
