Conte: What Happened Was Not a Coincidence, and This is My Response to Capello
Italian coach Antonio Conte admitted that his team Napoli is going through a complicated phase, following a shocking fall against PSV Eindhoven with a score of (6-2) in the third round of the Champions League group stage, marking the first time in his career that a team he manages has conceded six goals in a single match.
The coach said: "What happened was not a coincidence; there is certainly disappointment, but such things do not happen by chance. We need to benefit from what happened tonight to change our course. Last season, we won the Scudetto in an exceptional manner, with a small group of players who exceeded their limits. Now we have nine new faces in the locker room, which is not easy at all. I knew from the beginning that this season would be difficult."
He added: "We are suffering from significant absences like Højlund, Lobotka, Rahmani, and Lukaku, but this is the nature of the Champions League; this is the real level. We cannot complain, but we must work harder. I said during the preparation that this season would be complicated because absorbing all these changes takes time."
Regarding the loss of harmony, he said: "We need to try to regain the chemistry we had last season. Nine new players mean we are starting from almost zero, and harmony is not created overnight. We need to be patient and regain the mental and physical energy that allowed us to achieve last season's success."
When asked if he would change his playing style after the defeat, he replied: "What do you mean? If you win, the plan is successful, and if you lose, it becomes wrong? We try to play with four midfielders to achieve balance. Some demand two wingers, but that would disrupt the balance. I see no reason to change the tactics now."
He concluded in response to Fabio Capello's observation that he seemed devoid of energy on the sidelines: "I have never been known for joy on the sidelines, but for enthusiasm and anger! Perhaps I wasn't aggressive enough today, and that's why we lost 6-2. Next time, I will throw the chair like a lion tamer."
