Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola appeared in press statements after the victory over Villarreal 2-0 in the third round of the Champions League group stage.

The coach said: "A difficult stadium. We played very well. In the end, they had one or two chances, but we delivered a great match. A good step for us in this competition."

Regarding relying on Rico Lewis in midfield: "I am sure 90% of people see Rico Lewis on the pitch and know what he will do. I love this player. I love this type of player - offensively and defensively. He knows exactly when to move, and I am very happy with his performance."

He added: "It's good that Erling [Haaland] not only scored, but we also had more chances for others. The impact of Ryan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders was good as well. I feel a slight disappointment from the Monaco result; we created chances and did not win, and we played with the same performance we showed today, but we scored goals today. Spanish league teams are very strong, and the coach is top-notch. I am very happy."

On the injury of Nico Gonzales: "I feel a great disappointment; I hope it is not serious."

He concluded about achieving the first away win in the Champions League in over a year: "Last season was not good. Our numbers in the Champions League last year are not bad. Personally, my numbers are not bad. But last season was tough for us; the atmosphere and the team's playing style now make me feel comfortable."
