Flick: The Sevilla Match is Tough, and Yamal is Not Ready to Play Right Now
Saturday 04-10-2025
German Hans Flick, the head coach of Barcelona, spoke at the press conference prior to his team's match against Sevilla, as part of the eighth round of the La Liga season 2025/2026, which will take place tomorrow, Sunday, at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

Flick said about the Sevilla match: "Sevilla is a very strong team and plays aggressively; it will definitely be a tough match. We know our opponent well; they have their own style and strong fans behind them, so we expect a complicated encounter."

Regarding Lamine Yamal's condition: "Lamine felt fine; otherwise, he wouldn't have participated against Paris Saint-Germain. I spoke with him today; he is better, but he is not ready to play right now."

On managing Yamal's situation: "We talk with Yamal every day and work on helping him. Everyone knows his quality, but it is my responsibility to give him playing minutes gradually upon his return. If he is not 100% ready, he should focus on his strengths. With the ball, he is amazing, but he also needs to be good without it; we need to manage his minutes carefully."

On when he will return: "We do not know when Lamine will return; the injury is not muscular, and it is difficult to determine its duration. He could return in two weeks, three, or even four weeks. I do not know if he will be ready for the Clasico. He will work with the medical staff step by step, and we will see how things go."

On the disagreement with Luis de la Fuente, the coach of Spain: "The situation occurred after the last break in the league, and I just wanted to protect my players; that’s all. It’s over now and is in the past; I do not think negatively about it. These things always happen, and I have experienced them from the other side as well. I admit that I may have said things more strongly than usual, but I do not regret it; I just wanted to protect my players."

He added: "We need to focus on the present and future now and manage situations together: the players, clubs, and the national team. It’s over and behind us."

On the physical condition of the team after the match against Paris Saint-Germain: "This is part of the life of any great player; everyone wants to represent their national team, and we have to manage the minutes in a balanced way. It’s good that our players participate with their national teams, but it should be managed wisely."

On the call-up of Marc Bernal to the Spain U21 team: "Marc is not yet ready to play a large number of minutes; he recently returned from a serious injury that kept him out for over a year, and he has not fully regained his physical level. The Spanish federation should ensure his proper care."

On changing the international match schedule: "I do not have a specific opinion on that; it might be good for the federation, but I do not have a fixed viewpoint."

On the mistakes against Paris Saint-Germain: "Now we are back to focusing on the league, and the Sevilla match is very important for us. Everyone is sad after the defeat, but we must learn from our mistakes and be smarter, and we will do that."

On pressing and the high defensive line: "Pressing the opponent is an essential part of our style; it’s part of our identity. The back line cannot push up if there is no effective pressure on the ball carrier. We have improved recently, but we need to keep working."

On team spirit and ego: "We want everyone to be committed to the team as a single unit; this was the key to our success last season: hunger, ambition, and the desire for collective victory. We are not just talking about the players, but about everyone: the coaching staff, the club, and the fans. I am grateful for what I have seen after the last break; the spirit was positive, and the training was great. Against Paris Saint-Germain, we lost to a great team, but we must continue on our path with the same faith and work."
