Flick: Barcelona is Always Among the Contenders, and Facing Paris is a Great Test
Tuesday 30-09-2025
Barcelona's head coach, Hans Flick, spoke at the press conference for the match against Paris Saint-Germain, which will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at 10 PM Cairo time at the Montjuïc Stadium, as part of the second round of the group stage in the UEFA Champions League.

Flick said about the midfield battle: "I think all positions will be important, and we need to win individual duels all over the pitch. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow's match, and I believe we can always improve, and for that, Paris Saint-Germain is a great test."

Regarding Rashford, he added: "Of course, the Newcastle match gave him confidence, and it is never easy to adapt to a new league and new opponents, but he has done well."

On Pedri's leadership, he continued: "He is one of the leaders, and in his position, he should be one of the main leaders. I also listen to his opinion, and we talk a lot; it is important to hear different voices."

Regarding the desire for revenge and Barcelona's precedence, he confirmed: "We are Barcelona and always among the contenders, but the road is very long, and we have to work hard. We do not look at the past; everything has changed: Paris Saint-Germain, the players, Barcelona; we do not look at the past."

On goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, Flick said: "He is a player with whom we won three titles last season; he is ready, of course."

Regarding the attackers, he confirmed: "We will need Ferran Torres and Lewandowski together, and we will see who will play as a starter."

On Araújo, he added: "I have not decided on the defensive duo yet; what happened in the past is no longer useful. The situation is different now; for me, the conditions are not the same, and I have utmost confidence in all my players. Araújo is an amazing player, and he has shown that in recent matches; I am very happy with him."

On Lamine Yamal's return, Flick pointed out: "For me, over-praising a single player is not a good thing; we focus on work. He has talent and can reach very high levels, but he needs to continue working. It is not just about your skills with the ball; you also have to work defensively."

On controlling emotions: "We have to deal with that; it will not be easy tomorrow because we will face a team that competes with us for ball possession. But from the very first second, we have to play at our maximum capacity; this is the Champions League, and this is what I expect from my players."

On rotation in defense, he said: "Each opponent has its strengths, and we have to take advantage of the available opportunities according to the available players. As I said, it is not that I have not yet found the starting duo in central defense or anything like that; we have great confidence and quality, and you can see the injuries both teams are suffering from, and we have to deal with them. We lost players in midfield, but it is not about not finding the right combination; it is about how to face the match against the opponent."

Regarding absences, Flick confirmed: "It is part of our work; we have to know how to manage injuries; this is the situation."

On facing Paris Saint-Germain, the German coach said: "It is a different competition, and Luis Enrique is a great coach, and Paris Saint-Germain is a great team, as they showed last season and continue to prove this season."
