Mariska: The red card changed the course of the match, and Palmer was not ready
Saturday 20-09-2025
Chelsea coach Enzo Mariska appeared in a press statement after the loss against Manchester United 2-1 in the fifth round of the Premier League.

The coach said: "The red card changed the course of the match just three minutes in, and after the red card against them, and with the game becoming 10 against 10, the match changed for us. We needed to start the game better."

He added: "We deserved to get a penalty for Joao."

Regarding his substitutions, he said: "They attack with five players, so the idea was to defend with five as well. You can defend with four players when the game is 11 against 11. The match may have also changed after Casemiro's red card. We were much better after that."

About substituting Cole Palmer: "This morning he underwent a test to play in this match, but he was not fully ready. It was a great effort from him, and for the club, and his teammates. Unfortunately, he was not at 100%."

He concluded: "We need to start matches better. We cannot receive a red card at Old Trafford just three minutes in."
