UEFA's Exceptional Decision for Clubs Participating in European Competitions
Friday 12-09-2025
The European Football Association has announced an important amendment to the regulations of continental tournaments, allowing clubs participating in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League to substitute injured players from their official rosters.

During a meeting of UEFA's executive committee held on Thursday in Tirana, Albania, this decision was made with the aim of protecting clubs from unfair reductions in the number of registered players and alleviating physical pressure on players.

UEFA stated in an official statement: "The goal of this amendment is to ensure that clubs' rosters are not unfairly reduced and to protect players from additional pressures related to the intensity of matches."

Under previous regulations, clubs were required to submit a list of 25 players before the start of the group stage in each tournament, with no possibility of modifications except before the knockout stages.

Now, clubs can temporarily substitute an injured outfield player during the group stage without having to wait until February.

For example, if striker Randal Kolo Muani gets injured while playing for Tottenham, the English club can call up Mathys Tel, even though he was not included in the original roster, to temporarily replace him.
