Mbappe: We Achieved the Most Important Thing, and I Want to Surpass Giroud's Record
Wednesday 10-09-2025
Kylian Mbappe, the star of the French national team, appeared in press statements after the victory over Iceland (2-1) on Tuesday evening in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Mbappe said after the match: "There are many lessons to be learned from this match, not all of them positive. The victory allowed us to collect all the points, and that is the most important thing. We are happy to have surpassed a direct competitor."

He added: "My goal is always to help the team, and my priority is to keep the French national team at the top and continue winning. This is what keeps us at the top of the rankings. We must continue on this path, as the road to the World Cup is long, and that is our biggest goal."

Regarding surpassing Thierry Henry on the list of top scorers in the history of the French national team: "I am very happy. (Titi) Henry is a living legend of French football. But I still have a bigger goal, which is to surpass Olivier Giroud (57 goals). We should not celebrate too much, as there is still a lot of work to be done."

Mbappe raised his tally to 52 goals in the French national team jersey, becoming the second-best scorer in the history of the French team, surpassing Henry, who has 51 goals.

Kylian Mbappe is now just five goals away from equaling Giroud's record as the all-time top scorer for "Les Bleus," and six goals away from breaking the record and becoming the sole top scorer in the history of France.
