Conte: We Started with a Good Spirit and Relied on Last Season's Constants
Sunday 18-01-2026
Antonio Conte, the head coach of Napoli, expressed his satisfaction after the team won against Sassuolo with a clean sheet in the opening of the 2025/2026 Serie A season, pointing to the fighting spirit shown by his players and the ongoing work to integrate new signings.

Conte said after the match: "There is always room for improvement, we approached the match with the right mentality from the start, we wanted to show our mark immediately, I relied on the constants that were present last season, and I am currently working on integrating the new elements."

He added: "Today, only De Bruyne participated among the new arrivals; I am looking for the perfect combination to integrate the trio that was with us before with Kevin. We started working a short time ago, and some positive aspects appeared in building the play. We could have moved faster and played vertically, but we cut off some attacks that could have turned into dangerous chances. The most important thing is that we started with a good spirit."

Regarding Scott McTominay's role, who scored the first goal in the match, Conte said: "We are trying to exploit the players' characteristics in the best way. He is an offensive player, and when he moves from the back, he can be decisive. He has the ability to shoot from outside the area. The goal came from a situation we train on a lot; Politano did a great job, and Luka's movement was good. As for De Bruyne, he has different characteristics; he likes to lead the play and rarely enters the penalty area."

On his vision for the new Serie A season, Conte concluded his statements by saying: "The season will be tough and exciting; there are 7 or 8 teams that will compete for the title and qualification for the Champions League. All teams have become strong and equipped. We are trying to continue building the team, especially since we did not participate in European competitions last season, and we are integrating new elements now. This requires patience, and then we will strive to achieve the maximum possible benefit. Great coaches have returned to strong clubs, making the competition fiercer."
