Graham Arnold Approaches Leading the Black Lions

Monday 05-05-2025
A new phase for the Iraqi national team is on the horizon, with the impending signing of Australian coach Graham Arnold to succeed the recently dismissed Spanish coach Jesus Casas, whose contract was terminated by the Iraqi Football Association after a series of results that did not meet expectations.

Although the Iraqi Football Association has not officially announced the identity of the new coach yet, most close sources confirm that Arnold has become the closest option to lead the Black Lions in the upcoming phase, amid widespread public anticipation and waiting for an official announcement that may come in the next few days.

The association had opened negotiations with several prominent coaching names, including the veteran Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, Moroccan Hussein Ammouta, and Argentine Hector Cuper, but these attempts were unsuccessful, whether for financial or technical reasons, leaving Arnold as the most serious and stable name on the negotiation table.

Graham Arnold has an impressive coaching record, with his most notable achievement being his leadership of the Australian national team to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, after a challenging journey that began with a 2-1 victory over the UAE in the Asian playoff, followed by a penalty shootout win against Peru in the global playoff, securing Australia a spot in the World Cup for the sixth consecutive time.

Australia's qualification was not just a regular passage; Arnold left a clear mark in the 2022 World Cup, leading his team to achieve two valuable victories over Tunisia and Denmark, accumulating 6 points and tying with France at the top of the group, qualifying as the second in the standings only by goal difference behind the 2018 World Champion.

In the Round of 16, the Australian team faced Argentina and delivered a heroic performance despite losing 2-1, in one of Australia's best displays in major tournaments, which enhanced Arnold's reputation as a coach who excels in handling big matches and possesses a strong technical personality.

According to some sources, Arnold's contract with the Iraqi national team will include a clause allowing it to be terminated if the team fails to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, indicating that his project will be based on a clear goal that cannot be misinterpreted.

Arnold is expected to be present during the next international break, where the Iraqi national team will face two decisive matches in the Asian qualifiers, the first against South Korea in Basra on June 5, as part of the ninth round, followed by another match against Jordan in the capital Amman on June 10, as part of the tenth round.

The Black Lions need to win both matches to secure direct qualification to the World Cup, without waiting for the results of others, making this phase crucial in the history of the national team and placing significant pressure on the incoming coach.

So far, the Iraqi Football Association remains tight-lipped about the details of the negotiations, but all indicators confirm that Graham Arnold will be the new leader of the Black Lions in the upcoming challenges, awaiting the moment of the official announcement that could ignite the football atmosphere in the country.
