Czesny: What happened to me is unreal, and I'm not competing with Ter Stegen
Monday 14-04-2025
The goalkeeper of Barcelona, Wojciech Czesny, appeared in a press conference to talk about tomorrow's match against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at Signal Iduna Park.

The player said: "What will you think if Ter Stegen is registered in the Champions League instead of you? He started hitting hard from the beginning (laughs), I'm here to replace Marc, but I want to play in this tournament. I respect your opinion if it's the opposite; we have a good relationship.

He added: "Marc is only focused on returning to training. When he becomes available, the decision will be up to the coach, not us. There is no tension or discomfort for us. It's a special and sensitive situation. We will understand any decision and respect it; we both want the best for the team. We haven't talked about it directly, but we understand the situation; I haven't talked to him about when he will return. When he is ready, the decision for our participation will be up to the coach, but our goal is to help the team in this crucial period.

He continued: "We are at an important moment for me and for everyone. For me, playing some matches in the Champions League, we want to leverage the experience of the players to handle such matches. Qualification is not settled yet; we will play against a strong team in a difficult stadium. We need to be focused; we are here to win, not to avoid losing and to advance to the semi-finals. Our goal is to win.

He added: "What do you add to the team? I think that usually, when you are older, you have a different energy; younger players have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, older players are calmer. So you try to transfer your calmness and experience to the younger players; I try to help them from my position.

He emphasized: "Renewing your contract? I'm not thinking about it right now; we have important matches ahead until the end of the season. I want to focus on what remains of the season; I don't want to waste my energy negotiating a contract or thinking about my future. I want to win every title ahead of us; my agents are taking care of that.

He continued: "A few months ago, I was on the beach, and I didn't really want to play football, and now I'm playing with the team that I believe is the best in Europe. It feels unreal to me. But the part I enjoy is winning; when we win the match, and everyone is happy in the locker room, and the time we spend together, the training sessions, it's a beautiful feeling that I missed. So what I enjoy most is winning.

He explained: "When did Barcelona contact you to join them? After Ter Stegen's injury, there were rumors, but the first one to contact me was Deco, and I was playing golf with my son, which made the situation even stranger because you don't usually get offers from clubs like Barcelona while playing golf.

About his daily routine: "It's hard to explain my daily routine because it's long and complicated, but I recently discovered that meditation is important, and it helps you calm down, focus, and handle pressures, so I recommend it.

He added: "I want to win major titles, and this year has brought my dream of winning this particular tournament closer than ever. I want to seize this opportunity, and as I said, I want to focus on the last few weeks of the season to achieve special things.

He continued: "I don't think I'm more experienced than Ter Stegen because Marc has played at a high level for a very long time and has won the Champions League. Ter Stegen is at a high level, and there is no need to compare between us. I am fully ready now, and he is coming back from a long injury, but when he is 100% ready, there aren't many goalkeepers better than him.

He concluded: "Lewandowski has helped me in Barcelona in terms of personal adjustment. I think the hardest part for me was the mental shift from being retired to being 100% focused; that is the difficult part. But as I said, Robert and his family, and other friends we have living in Barcelona, have helped us a lot, me and my family, to adjust.
