Carragher Apologizes: I Underestimated the Value of the Africa Cup of Nations
Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool legend, expressed his regret about his recent statements that undermined the value of the Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that he did not intend to belittle the tournament, but was defending Mohamed Salah in the Ballon d'Or race.
In his remarks, Carragher said: "What I want to say is that I was wrong when I described the Africa Cup of Nations as not a major tournament; that was inappropriate."
He added: "I was trying to explain why Mohamed Salah deserves to win the Ballon d'Or, and I believe there are five major continental tournaments aside from the World Cup, which are significant tournaments that deserve recognition."
Carragher clarified that his comments were not directed solely at the Africa Cup of Nations, but also at tournaments like the Asian Games, the Gold Cup, and the Copa America.
He concluded his statements by saying: "I was defending Salah to be the first African player to win the Ballon d'Or since George Weah in the 1990s, but I should have been more precise in expressing my opinion."
