Atlético regain Johnny Cardoso ahead of clash with Barcelona

Atlético have received an important boost ahead of their upcoming clash against FC Barcelona, with American midfielder Johnny Cardoso ready to return to the squad for the match scheduled on Sunday in LaLiga.

Johnny Cardoso has trained with the group and received medical clearance, providing coach Diego Simeone with an additional option in midfield for a crucial match that holds significant importance for both teams, who are competing for the top of the table ahead of the international break.

Johnny Cardoso's involvement in Diego Simeone's plans has gradually increased after recovering from ankle surgery that kept him out of the FIFA World Cup held in his home country, the United States. The coaching staff has been careful to reintroduce the player to competitions to avoid any new setbacks.

The player reached his best form during the Madrid derby against Real Madrid, playing the full 90 minutes, before starting three consecutive matches in the starting lineup, confirming his importance in Simeone's plans when he is in peak physical condition.

On the other hand, Hans Flick is waiting for the return of Eric Garcia, who seems to have a good chance of being included in FC Barcelona's squad, with the possibility of him participating for a few minutes if needed. This would represent an important boost for the Catalan team given the defensive shortage they are experiencing.

FC Barcelona faces a clear crisis in defense, with Pau Cubarsí being the only fit central defender. Gerard Martín is struggling with ankle discomfort, while Jules Koundé and Xavi Espasart are sidelined due to injuries. Alejandro Balde does not have the full confidence of the coaching staff, which increases the importance of relying on Braian Fariñas and Frenkie de Jong in the central defense position.

Atlético will be without their captain Koke and defender Cristian Romero, while Barcelona faces several absences including Xavi Espasart, Koundé, and Christensen in defense, Rodri and Dani Olmo in midfield, along with Roony Bardghji, whose season has ended due to injury.
