Zakaria Aboukhlal receives racist threats and abuse after injuring Italian player
Moroccan international Zakaria Aboukhlal, a player for Torino, has found himself at the center of a widespread campaign of abuse and threats on social media after his strong challenge resulted in a serious injury to striker Antonio Raimondo of Frosinone during the match between the two teams on Sunday in the Serie A.
According to the website 'Foot Mercato', Moroccan player Zakaria Aboukhlal has faced a barrage of abusive comments, which have not been limited to sports criticism but have extended to threats and racist remarks, following the injury sustained by Raimundo to his left ankle.
The injury has sparked angry reactions across social media platforms, with Aboukhlal's official page on Instagram turning into a battleground for criticism, as several followers blamed him for the injury sustained by the Frosinone striker.
The comments included offensive phrases, including calls for him to return to carpentry and retire, as well as accusations of destroying the careers of other players, clearly crossing the boundaries of sports criticism and reaching personal and racist insults.
On the other hand, Aboukhlal was keen to express his regret for what happened, confirming that his intervention was not intentional and that he had no intention of harming his opponent.
The Moroccan player issued an apology to Raimundo, stating: "I apologize to Raimundo, I never intended to hurt him."
