Tunisian club Esperance escalates against Libya Sports Channel
Tunisian club Espérance has rejected what it describes as false accusations from a commentator and journalists at Libya Sports Channel regarding the club's influence on referees during its continental matches. The club has hinted at taking legal and regulatory actions, including the possibility of preventing the channel from broadcasting the return match against Al-Suwahli.
The Tunisian club's stance came after their loss to Al-Suwaihli by a goal to nil in the first leg of the CAF Champions League Round of 32, following media statements regarding officiating and matches involving Espérance that sparked angry reactions within the club.
Espérance de Tunis has issued an official statement rejecting the allegations made by employees of the channel, asserting that the accusations of exerting pressure on referees and influencing match results are unfounded claims that lack evidence and tarnish its reputation, history, and standing at both local and continental levels.
The club emphasized that its results and achievements are the result of the efforts of its players, coaching staff, and management, alongside the support of its fans, affirming its respect for fair competition and the regulations governing football.
Tunisian club Espérance has demanded an official clarification and public apology from Libya Sports Channel regarding statements made by its employees, noting that it reserves the right to resort to necessary legal and regulatory measures, including addressing the relevant media and sports authorities in defense of its reputation.
The statement revealed that the club is studying the possibility of not allowing the channel to broadcast the return match if its demands are not met. It called on sports media to adhere to objectivity and professionalism and to respect the facts, in order to maintain the fraternal relations between the Tunisian and Libyan peoples and to enhance the values of sportsmanship.
Al-Suwaihli, the Libyan league champions, secured a first-leg victory with a goal from Ayoub Ayad via a penalty in the 64th minute, leaving Esperance with the task of overturning the deficit in the second leg.
The return matches are set to take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to determine the teams qualifying for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
