Speculation is growing regarding İlkay Gündoğan's future with Galatasaray as the midfielder has seen reduced playing time under manager Okan Buruk. This comes as he is approaching a match against FC Barcelona, his former team, in the UEFA Champions League, amid reports suggesting a possible departure during the upcoming winter transfer window.

İlkay Gündoğan has not received more than 11 minutes of playing time since the start of the current season, which has caused him dissatisfaction and led him to publicly express his frustration with his situation within the team, just days before the anticipated match against FC Barcelona.

The player's comments came after Galatasaray secured a 3-1 victory over Kasımpaşa last Friday, when a journalist asked him about his readiness to participate against FC Barcelona. He responded, saying: "If I'm not playing, why should I be ready?", indicating his frustration with the lack of playing minutes.

İlkay Gündoğan has previously won the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City before moving to FC Barcelona, where he played an important role in the dressing room during the 2023-2024 season, which saw him regularly participate with the Catalan team.

Okan Buruk attempted to manage the situation during the press conference, emphasizing İlkay Gündoğan's importance to the team, and noting that his statements may have come from his frustration at not being given the opportunity to participate.

Galatasaray's coach said: "He may have felt frustrated because he couldn't warm up and enter the match. Gündoğan is a very important player for us, and it's natural for him to want playing minutes."

The debate has extended to social media, with İlkay Gündoğan's wife, Sara, responding to a fan who asked about his absence, urging him to direct the question to the team's coach.

In light of his limited participation since the start of the season, Ilkay Gündoğan's chances of starting against FC Barcelona in the lineup are unclear, pending the coaching staff's decision on whether to utilize his experience in the upcoming match.

According to Turkish site 'Daily Sabah', İlkay Gündoğan could be among the first players to leave Galatasaray during the upcoming winter transfer window, with the possibility of mutually ending his association with the club.

The German midfielder is contracted to the Turkish team until 2027, but his reduced appearances and reports of dissatisfaction with his current situation could open the door for discussions about his future next January.

İlkay Gündoğan has impressed with FC Barcelona under Xavi in the 2023-2024 season, having played 51 matches in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing 14 assists. However, he ended his time with the Catalan team without winning any trophies.

As the clash with FC Barcelona approaches, all eyes are on İlkay Gündoğan's situation at Galatasaray, and whether he will get another chance to prove his abilities, or if his current crisis will hasten his departure from the Turkish club in January.
