Al-Shorta and Al-Student settle for goalless draw in the league
The top match of the ninth round of the Iraqi Premier League between Al-Shorta and Al-Student ended in a goalless draw 0-0, in the match that took place this evening, Thursday, at the Al-Madina International Stadium in Baghdad, amid great disappointment from the fans of both teams who were expecting goals and excitement.
The match saw a significant restriction of play in midfield, with a complete absence of dangerous chances on goal, as both teams failed to break down each other's defensive setups. Both sides relied on excessive defensive caution, which kept the ball trapped in the midfield area throughout the first half.
Al-Shorta were somewhat better in terms of possession and control, attempting to build attacks, but that superiority did not translate into genuine opportunities on Al-Student's goal, who relied on defending and counter-attacks that posed no significant threat.
The second half was much like the first, with a continuation of the same scenario. There was a lack of opportunities and many physical interventions spoiled the enjoyment of the match, which ended as it began, goalless.
With this draw, Al-Shorta have increased their tally to 16 points, remaining in 4th place in the Iraqi Premier League table, missing a valuable opportunity to advance towards the top and close the gap on leaders Al-Kahraba and Al-Zawraa.
Al Talaba have increased their tally to 11 points in 10th place, continuing their inconsistent results this season, as they failed to secure a win for the second consecutive match.
