German Paris Brunner, AS Monaco's forward, sparked widespread controversy after celebrating his stunning goal against RC Strasbourg Alsace in the match that ended in a 1-1 draw in the 4th round of Ligue 1.

Paris Brunner equalised for AS Monaco in the 71st minute with a powerful shot, before heading towards the stands of RC Strasbourg Alsace fans, where he made a gesture that appeared to mimic cutting his throat, in a celebration that angered the home supporters and prompted his teammates Lamine Camara and Denis Zakaria to try to calm him down.

After the match, the German forward explained his behavior, saying: "The fans talked about my family, about my mother and father, and I could see them. There were a lot of emotions, especially after scoring a goal like that."

Brunner added: "I didn't want to be disrespectful. I can't say I'm regretful, but that wasn't the message I wanted to convey, it was misunderstood. What I wanted to say was: what a goal, that's it."

Later, the AS Monaco player apologised via his Instagram account, confirming that he acted under the influence of emotion and that the gesture was unfortunate, stressing that he did not intend to offend anyone. Paris Brunner may face the possibility of disciplinary action due to his celebration, according to what the disciplinary committee will decide.
