Karim Benzema wanted in Iraq: what's the truth?

French star Karim Benzema has sparked social media buzz in Iraq after reports emerged about his potential move to Al-Karmah in the coming days.

The 38-year-old French forward has become a free agent after his contract with Al-Hilal was terminated. Benzema spent only 7 months with the blue team, having joined in January 2026 on a free transfer from Al-Ittihad.

Sources close to Al-Karma Club's management have categorically denied the circulating news. They confirmed that "what is being circulated about interest in signing Karim Benzema is unfounded, and there has been no communication with the player or his agents."

Sources added: "We are well aware of our financial capabilities and limits in the transfer market. The club's policy is clear and firm, and we cannot enter into a deal that exceeds half a million dollars for any player, regardless of their name or stature. Even if the club is sold, this ceiling will not change, so the idea of signing Benzema is completely ruled out."

It continued: "We believe that linking the name of Al Karma with Benzema is an attempt to target the team. Al Karma has built a competitive team over the past few years with its own capabilities, and there are clubs that have spent huge amounts without receiving the same media attention."

The club's management has confirmed that the transfer files have been closed in coordination with coach Moamen Soliman, and that the team is now complete after addressing the gaps requested by the coaching staff.

"There will be no new additions at this time. Any upcoming moves will be in the winter transfer window and very limited to just fill gaps, not to replace players."

Karim Benzema previously visited Iraq as a player, specifically to Erbil and the François Hariri Stadium, when his former team Al-Ittihad faced Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the AFC Champions League in 2023.

The match saw a large turnout for the French star, ending with the Falcons winning 2-0 in the fourth round of the continental tournament.
