Erik García approaches bigger role with Spain national team

Erik García has a new opportunity for a bigger role with Spain after Marcos Llorente's international retirement, which has opened the door for him to compete for the right-back position.

Jordi García's shift to right-back at FC Barcelona seemed to hinder his chances with Spain, but he can now compete with Pedro Porro for the position, especially with his ability to also play at centre-back.

According to "Sport", Garcia's continued good form with FC Barcelona will give him the opportunity to keep receiving call-ups from Luis de la Fuente, who values his ability to play in multiple positions.

Spain's options at right-back have diminished with the absence of Dani Carvajal and the retirement of Jesús Navas, while Óscar Mingueza has received his chance, as Iván Fresneda stands out with the Under-21 national team.

Garcia is highly regarded within the national team, having been committed to the group during the World Cup before participating in the final against Argentina. He had previously played under De la Fuente in the youth categories and won gold with him at the Paris Olympics.

Garcia's versatility gives coach De La Fuente an important option ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches, as Spain seeks to reclaim the title they won in 2023, following their defeat in the 2025 final against Portugal on penalties.
