Malek Fofana's future has taken a surprising turn after AS Roma decided to halt negotiations to sign the Olympique Lyon winger during the current summer transfer window.

Wesley Fofana, 21, has returned to the pitch after a long absence during the 2025/2026 season due to a serious ankle injury, while Lyon has not closed the door on his departure, provided they receive at least €40 million.

Roma has previously reached an agreement with Fofana regarding personal terms. The Italian club plans to submit a loan offer of €5 million, with a conditional obligation to buy set at €30 million, along with incentives and a percentage of any future resale.

However, the Fofana deal has been impacted by Roma's signing of Portuguese player Rodrigo Mora from Porto for €25 million, securing 50% of his economic rights, which has made finalizing the transfer of the Belgian winger more challenging.

According to "La Repubblica," Roma owner Dan Friedkin has rejected approval for another deal valued between €30 and €35 million, leading the club to halt negotiations. Reports confirm that discussions regarding Fofana have significantly declined.

Meanwhile, Lyon is holding on to Fofana for now, especially with the team nearing qualification for the Champions League, as the club stands to earn at least €23 million if they eliminate Fenerbahçe. Currently, Roma's priority is to strengthen their defense.
