Historic Ban in England: West Brom Striker Punished for Hand Goal!
English football has witnessed an unprecedented incident as the Football Association has decided to suspend Norwegian striker Uni Heggebø of West Bromwich Albion for two matches due to scoring a handball goal during the Championship clash against Norwich City.
Hegibbo scored the first goal for West Brom during their 2-1 victory over Norwich, as the ball deflected off his arm and into the net. However, the referee awarded the goal despite protests from Norwich players and coaching staff, with no VAR technology used in the English Championship.
Following the match, the FA opened an investigation into the player, charging him with "successfully deceiving the match referee" under Article E3.1, before an independent regulatory committee confirmed the violation and suspended the player for two matches. This marks the first case of its kind in English football since the rule was amended.
Hegibbo denied the charge, while West Brom submitted an appeal, clarifying that the ball deflected off the Norwich goalkeeper before hitting the player's arm, and that the time available for him to react was less than a fraction of a second. Despite this, the appeal was rejected and the penalty upheld.
The Norwegian forward will begin serving his suspension against Burnley, then he will miss the League Cup match against Newcastle United, with a return expected for the game against Middlesbrough on August 29. This incident has reignited the debate about the absence of VAR in the EFL Championship.
