UEFA Announces New Approach to Video Technology in Europe

UEFA is set to make an important change in the way Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is utilized, adopting a clearer approach aimed at unifying officiating decisions and reducing unnecessary interventions during matches.

In this context, UEFA has launched a new platform called "Clear Line", which includes more than 150 different refereeing cases, aimed at establishing a unified reference for referees and video assistant referee teams, clarifying the situations that require intervention and those where the on-field referee's decision should be respected.

According to the new approach, VAR intervention will be limited to situations that involve a "clear and obvious error," while the technology will not be required to intervene in fine details or marginal cases that do not represent a clear refereeing mistake.

This comes as part of UEFA's desire to reaffirm that the on-field referee is the primary decision-maker within the pitch, and that video technology should be a tool to assist him and correct clear errors, rather than a means to re-referee every incident or excessively review decisions.

UEFA believes that video technology should not manage the match, but rather be limited to clear cases and obvious mistakes, which means reducing stoppages and reviews related to minor details.

UEFA is adopting a more conservative refereeing approach in dealing with video technology, a shift that differs from the strategy employed by FIFA during the recent World Cup. This move reflects a European desire to maintain the authority of on-field referees and reduce the influence of the VAR room on the flow of matches.
