Renard in Line to Coach Algeria if Petkovic Departs

French media reports, notably Foot Mercato, have revealed that coach Hervé Renard has resurfaced as a candidate to take over the Algeria national team, should the Algerian Football Federation decide to make a change in the coaching staff led by Vladimir Petkovic.

According to the report, no official communications have taken place between the Algerian Football Federation and Renard so far, but the latter is considered a viable option should the situation regarding Petkovic's future develop.

Hervé Renard boasts a remarkable track record in African football, having won the Africa Cup of Nations twice, with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015. He also previously managed Algerian club CR Belouizdad in 2011, giving him a solid understanding of Algerian football.

Despite the controversy following Algeria's exit in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland, Vladimir Petkovic continues to hold the position of head coach of the national team, having had his contract renewed until July 31, 2028. This makes any decision to dismiss him financially costly.

The report indicated that the National Technical College affiliated with the Algerian Federation recommended keeping Petkovic, while suggesting adjustments to the coaching staff and the addition of Algerian coaches. However, the federation has not yet announced any official changes.

Hervé Renard is also attracting interest from the football federations of South Korea, South Africa, and Senegal, which could complicate Algeria's efforts if they decide to pursue him.
