The historic celebrations for Spain's 2026 World Cup title turned into a tragedy in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, after the collapse of a fountain resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy and left another child seriously injured.

According to Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," the incident occurred around 1:30 AM on Monday when the stone fountain in Glorieta del Árbol Gordo collapsed as dozens of people gathered to celebrate Spain's victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.

The source added that the incident resulted in the death of a child at the scene, while another child suffered a broken leg and was transported to Salamanca Hospital for treatment. A third child received necessary first aid at the health center in Ciudad Rodrigo before being allowed to leave.

The report indicated that around 50 people were present at the site when the fountain collapsed, while emergency services received multiple calls at 1:33 AM in the Castilla y León region, reporting that the fountain had fallen on a number of celebrants.

Following the incident, local authorities dispatched the police, civil guard, and fire teams from the province of Salamanca, along with health emergency teams, to the site to assist the injured and secure the area.

The agency has confirmed that a psychological intervention team has been activated to provide mental health support to the family of the deceased child, following the incident that cast a shadow over the celebrations for the world title.
