Iglesias: I Don't Want to Go to Jail Over Trump Handshake

Spain's striker Borja Iglesias has stirred controversy just hours before the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina, after commenting on the possibility of shaking hands with U.S. President Donald Trump during the trophy presentation for the winning team.

Iglesias stated in comments reported by Spanish media: "I don't want to go to prison. I hope to greet him at a time when we are all happy, and that this passes quickly so I can forget about it."

He added: "I don't think this is the right time to stir up controversy. Everyone knows well what I'm thinking."

The Spanish player indicated that he wishes to do many things, but he does not have the ability to change certain realities, emphasizing that people sometimes overestimate his impact.

Iglesias is known for his political and human rights stances, having previously announced his support for Palestinian protesters. He also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that he "struggles to accept those who fight for progress and fundamental values."

Donald Trump is expected to attend the final match and take part in the trophy presentation for the 2026 World Cup alongside the President of FIFA.
