De la Fuente: France is worried, and what Merino is doing is incredible
Luis de la Fuente expressed his immense joy at Spain's qualification for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Belgium, with a late goal from Mikel Merino.
The Spanish coach stated after the match: "This is the character and personality of the team in all circumstances and situations."
He continued: "I reiterate my pride in leading this team that has a constant desire to develop and improve. We created enough chances to secure the match more comfortably, but we must recognize how difficult it is to achieve victories and give it the true value it deserves."
De la Fuente praised Merino's crucial role, saying: "What he is doing is incredible. He has so many qualities, and he is one of the best players in the world who can play in any team. We are lucky to have him, and we know he is always there when we need him."
He concluded regarding the upcoming clash against France in the semi-finals: "It is natural for us to think about working to outdo them, and I believe they are just as worried about us. We are the only team that has managed to beat them in two consecutive matches. It will be a clash between two very strong teams."
