Unprecedented Honor for Vozinha After World Cup Brilliance
Cape Verde's goalkeeper, Josimar José Evora Dias (Vozinha), has received an exceptional honor following his impressive performances in the 2026 World Cup, as a Spanish biologist has named a new species of marine mollusk after him in recognition of his contributions during the tournament.
Spanish marine biodiversity researcher, Jesús Ortía, revealed that the new species has been registered under the scientific name Aldisa vozinha, explaining that the name was chosen to honor the veteran goalkeeper who caught attention with his remarkable performance in Cape Verde's first-ever World Cup appearance.
Ortía noted that the bright red color characteristic of this marine mollusk was one of the reasons for choosing the name Vozinha, considering that the naming also serves as a tribute to the people of Cape Verde. It is worth mentioning that the Spanish researcher previously received a merit award from the Cape Verdean government in 2023 for his scientific research in the archipelago's waters.
At 40 years old, Vozinha was one of the standout stars of the tournament, leading his country to a commendable showing and impressing with a series of crucial saves against strong teams, becoming one of the major surprises of the 2026 World Cup and receiving widespread acclaim both inside and outside Africa.
