Mido Slams FIFA and Infantino After Egypt's World Cup Exit
Ahmed Hossam Mido, the former star of the Egyptian national team, has launched a scathing attack on FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino after Egypt was knocked out in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, losing 3-2 to Argentina. He directed sharp criticism at the global governance of the sport.
Mido called for an end to Infantino's presidency, arguing that football is now managed more by commercial interests than by sporting principles, which he believes affects the integrity of competitions and their decisions.
On his official X account, Mido wrote: "With the rampant corruption in football, judicial bodies within FIFA have become tools for officials to make decisions that serve their interests."
He continued his attack, stating that this approach has persisted for years without any action, adding: "Now they have invented VAR technology to control match outcomes according to their personal interests."
The former Zamalek star emphasized that he has previously criticized FIFA's policies on multiple occasions, mentioning that he has often spoken about what he calls "FIFA corruption and Infantino's corruption," asserting that the capitalist mindset governing the organization harms the future of football.
He added: "Today, the positions of those who support Infantino are exposed, and anyone who backs him should feel ashamed. His departure from FIFA's presidency is essential for the future of the game."
Mido also noted that FIFA treats football as a business project, explaining that Egypt's victory over Argentina would have resulted in significant financial losses for FIFA.
Despite his sharp criticisms, Mido made sure to send a message of support to the Egyptian players and coaching staff, praising the level the team displayed in the tournament, stating: "I thank the players and the coaching staff; this is the first time in my life I acknowledge an honorable exit."
Mido's comments came in the wake of the controversy surrounding the Egypt-Argentina match, as the Egyptian side expressed objections to several refereeing decisions, particularly those related to the VAR technology.
