Belgian FA Escalates Balogun Controversy
The Belgian Football Association has intensified its stance ahead of the Round of 16 clash against the United States in the 2026 World Cup, issuing an official statement that it has informed the U.S. Soccer Federation of its intention to contest the match result and pursue all available legal actions if forward Folarin Balogun is included in the official match roster.
This escalation follows FIFA's decision to suspend the enforcement of a ban imposed on Balogun after his red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing the American striker to participate against Belgium.
The Belgian FA believes this decision contradicts the tournament regulations, asserting that it has not received the full legal justifications on which FIFA based its announcement of the player's eligibility.
In its statement, the Belgian FA declared that it considers Balogun ineligible to participate if his name appears on the official match sheet, emphasizing that it reserves the right to appeal to sports judicial bodies, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), in defense of the principles of fair play and competition integrity.
Conversely, FIFA's Appeals Committee rejected the Belgian appeal procedurally, stating that the Belgian FA lacks the legal standing to contest the disciplinary committee's decision. However, the Belgian FA confirmed that this will not prevent it from taking further legal steps if Balogun plays in the match.
