Garcia Discusses Balogun Controversy: He’s Not to Blame
Belgium's head coach, Rudi Garcia, confirmed that he met with American striker Folarin Balogun after the match between their teams in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, following the significant controversy surrounding FIFA's decision to suspend Balogun's ban and allow him to play.
Garcia explained that Balogun approached him after Belgium's 4-1 victory, which secured their place in the quarter-finals, describing the move as positive. He emphasized that he appreciated the player's initiative to clarify the situation, especially given the widespread criticism surrounding FIFA's decision prior to the match.
The Belgian coach stated: "Folarin Balogun came to talk to me, and I liked that. It’s not his fault; he’s not responsible for what happened, and I told him that. I really appreciate that he came to speak with me."
The decision to suspend Balogun's ban sparked a storm of controversy, allowing him to participate against Belgium despite being sent off in the previous round. This decision faced significant backlash from prominent football figures, including former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who deemed it a dangerous precedent that undermines the principle of sporting fairness.
