La Liga First Round: Barcelona Clashes with Bilbao, Real Madrid Hosts Sociedad
The Spanish League Association revealed today, Tuesday, the match schedule for the 2026-2027 season, which kicks off on August 14 and continues until May 30, amid great anticipation for the new season's competitions.
Barcelona, the defending Spanish league champion, begins its title defense campaign with a strong match against Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou, while Real Madrid, led by coach José Mourinho, starts its journey facing Real Sociedad at Santiago Bernabéu.
Some matches from the first round might be postponed if a number of club players continue in the final stages of the 2026 World Cup, which could affect matches for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao.
The opening round witnessed the return of the promoted clubs Racing Santander, Deportivo La Coruña, and Málaga to the top league, with Racing facing Villarreal, Deportivo clashing with Elche, and Málaga visiting Atlético Madrid.
The new season schedule is based on an 'asymmetric calendar' system, which considers more than 400 conditions and requests from clubs and organizing bodies, aiming to avoid overlapping major matches on the same day and achieve the best distribution of fixtures throughout the season.
The league will also pause during the Christmas period, with the winter break starting on December 22 and activities resuming on January 2, alongside three international breaks designated for national team matches, while the season includes only two rounds held midweek.
