Mexican fans are experiencing a mix of optimism and anxiety ahead of facing the Ecuadorian team in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, as the talk resurfaces about the "curse of the fourth match" that has haunted the Mexican team for many decades.

Despite the Mexican national team achieving a perfect record in the group stage with three victories and three clean sheets, concerns about repeating previous elimination scenarios remain strongly present.

Since the 1994 World Cup, the Mexican national team has been accustomed to advancing from the group stage only to be eliminated immediately in the first knockout match. The only exception was the 2022 Qatar World Cup when they failed to advance past the first round. The last time the Mexican team reached what is locally known as the "fifth match" was in the 1986 World Cup, hosted by Mexico, when they reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Germany in a penalty shootout.

The Mexican national team will face a tough test against Ecuador, who enters the match after a surprising 2-1 victory over Germany and includes a group of prominent stars such as William Pacho, Piero Hincapié, and Moisés Caicedo. Despite Ecuador's superiority on paper in terms of market value and European experience, coach Javier Aguirre's team has shown great defensive cohesion throughout the tournament.

The former Argentine star Jorge Valdano believes that the biggest obstacle facing Mexico is not technical but psychological, pointing out that confidence is the key to overcoming the "fear of the fifth match."

As for former Mexican star Javier Cruz, he affirmed that the achievement of 1986 proves that reaching the quarter-finals is possible, adding that the current generation may get accustomed to victories. Amidst fear and hope, a phrase that has recently become popular in Mexico echoes: "I know it won't happen, but what if it actually does?"
